Earth Matters The well being of planet earth and its inhabitants depends on our ability to prevent further destruction to our ecosystem, to protect its natural resources, and to prohibit the extinction of its plants, animals, and peoples. A report issued by the scientific community, released February 1, 2007, is just another attempt to inform the world's population of the impending disasters looming over this planet if we do not stop the actions contributing to the greenhouse effect. The US immediately reacted to this report stating that while they appreciated the work of the scientists it does not believe we (the US) are the main contributors to the problem. This inability to take responsibility really frosts my butt. Our politicians and the agencies working for our government need to understand that it does not matter if we are or are not the "main" contributor to the problem. We can not continue to sit back on our haunches and hope that some other country will take the lead. We must take responsibility for our actions and make changes even though they may have economic repercussion on some of our large corporations. What I can't understand is why we are not taking advantage of a challenge that will undoubtedly result in new businesses, that will provide new job opportunities, and that will help to keep the economy stable. That having been said, would it not be in the best interest of "big" business to invest in these new technologies. Every year hundreds of men and women graduate from some of the finest technical colleges in the U.S. They are filled with the prospect of making a difference to the way we live. They are excited about having the opportunity to express new ideas that may change the future of our society. Unfortunately, only a handful will end up with careers that will allow them to fulfill their dreams. Every industry has some kind of research and development. It's an on going process to take a product and make it better, more affordable, and more marketable. What industry is afraid of is a new product that threatens to cut into their profit margins or worse, put them out of business, but it doesn't have to be that way. Taking an active role in the development of these products puts them on the leading edge not only in this country, but also around the world. This is not the time to be preventing new ideas from coming to fruition. This is the time for "big" business to lend a hand to these up and coming entrepreneurs and become a part of the New World. It's time for corporations to move beyond the "bottom line" and encourage change and incorporate these new ideas into their own products. The future of this planet lies in the minds of our youth, not in the value of a piece of paper. Two possible ways of doing this is by increasing research and development within corporations providing new jobs and/or investing in new entrepreneurial enterprises that will improve the products of the contributing business and the effect these products have on the environment. What the general public needs to understand is that we must be as responsible for our actions as we expect the government and the corporations to be. There are some very easy steps we can take to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide, the main contributor of green house gases, we release into the environment. It can be as easy as changing to an energy efficient light bulb to buying clothing made of 100% cotton or all wool. Check out the National Wildlife Federations article on what you can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by clicking here. I think you'll be surprised to find out what just a few small changes can make to our environment. If we're willing to make changes maybe industry and the government will follow suit. If they don't, we have alternatives. We don't have to buy their products and we can replace our politicians. Now there's a novel idea. ~~ "Life was meant to be lived, and
curiosity must be kept alive. One must never, for whatever reason, turn
his back on life."
