Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

Friggit Frog. My backyard prince.

For many of us, our pets are an essential part of our family. Even wild animals capture our hearts and we build relationships with many of them. They become a part of our lives, and I believe, we become a part of theirs. Such was the case with Friggit.

Three years ago we found this tiny frog sitting on the edge of the fish pond. We didn't get too excited because we are often visited by frogs. Generally they stay a few weeks and with the first substantial rainfall, they hop away to parts unknown. This new frog was different.

Friggit lived with us for three years. He never left the yard. In fact, he would visit all the gardens in the yard, staying away from the pond for 3 or 4 days at a time. He seemed to sense that I worried about him for every time I opened the back door, he would croak to let me know where he was.

We watched him grow over the years and was so pleased he had decided to stay with us. We loved to watch him sit in his frog jacuzzi or lay about as the chipmunks scurried around him. I think he felt safe in the yard.

Last fall a new little frog joined him in the pond. We were looking forward to seeing how well they would get along together, but that was not to be.

This winter, Friggit crossed over the rainbow bridge to be with all his old friends. Somehow, he got caught up in the ice that formed on the top of the pond. It was during a cold spell and we had to remove the ice to allow oxygen into the pond for the fish. We didn't find him until the ice melted. I will miss this little friend who was so delightful to watch.

RIP Friggit Frog.
