Poems & Quotations

First a howling blizzard woke us,
Then the rain came down to soak us,
And now before the eye can focus -
Crocus.

~Lilja Rogers

I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden. ~Ruth Stout

~~~
The March wind roars
Like a lion in the sky,
And makes us shiver
As he passes by.
~~~

When winds are soft,
And the days are warm and clear,
Just like a gentle lamb,
Then spring is here.
- Author Unknown

The air is like a butterfly
With frail blue wings.
The happy earth looks at the sky
And sings.

- Joyce Kilmer, Spring

Springtime is the land awakening.
The March winds are the morning yawn.

Spring is Here!

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.
~Henry Van Dyke

It's hard to believe when I look out the window and see more snow that winter is almost over and my favorite time of the year is almost here.  Thank goodness!

It has been an exceptionally long season for me.  The chipmunks seem to know when the weather is going to turn bad and head for their burrows early.  Last year they took for cover the first week in November.  That's, on an average, six to seven weeks earlier than previous years.

Of course, they were right.  We had one of the worst Decembers in years.  It reminded me of when I was a kid and that is way to many years ago to remember.

Spring starts for me when I see my first chipmunk, usually by the second or third week in February.  This year it was February 29th, and to my surprise, it was Ivana the Terrible who I will have to rename Ivan.

This is Ivans den under the patio. He had to dig through a lot of snow and ice to get out. Guess you can't keep a good chipmunk down.

The males are always the first to come out of their dens.  Then it's off to find the girls.  Once they find a females den, they'll  hang around until the females are ready to come out.

The females, on the other hand, will emerge for one day out of their three day cycle, usually between the middle to the end of March.  It's a very short window of opportunity.  This year, little Miss Ears came out to greet me on March 1st.  My guess is she was low on food.

As always, it is great to see my little friends.  Ivan is off in the woods somewhere so Ears feels pretty safe coming out.  She's eaten all the cranberries I put out for her and taken her stash of seeds back to her den.  She'll be staying pretty close to home for the next couple of weeks, but at least we got to spend some time together until she comes out for the season.  I've had my chippy fix for now.  At last, winter is over.

The sun is brilliant in the sky but its warmth does not reach my face.
The breeze stirs the trees but leaves my hair unmoved.
The cooling rain will feed the grass but will not slake my thirst.
It is all inches away but further from me than my dreams.

- M. Romeo LaFlamme, The First of March

Tracks in the snow Dec. 07- About a 6' span. Maybe it was a visit from Big Foot.

Don't know who made these tracks, but it was no chipmunk.

Botanists say that trees need the powerful March winds to flex
their trunks and main branches, so the sap is drawn up to
nourish the budding leaves. Perhaps we need the gales of life
in the same way, though we dislike enduring them.

- Jane Truax

Each leaf,
each blade of grass
vies for attention.

Even weeds
carry tiny blossoms
to astonish us.

No winter lasts forever; no spring skips it's turn.
