Poems & Quotations

I ate too much turkey,
I ate too much corn,
I ate too much pudding and pie,
I'm stuffed up with muffins
and much too much stuffin',
I'm probably going to die.

I piled up my plate
and I ate and I ate,
but I wish I had known when to stop,
for I'm so crammed with yams,
sauces, gravies, and jams
that my buttons are starting to pop.

I'm full of tomatoes
and french fried potatoes,
my stomach is swollen and sore,
but there's still some dessert,
so I guess it won't hurt
if I eat just a little bit more.
- Jack Prelutsky, I Ate Too Much

Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.  ~Edith Sitwell

Winter is the season in which people try to keep the house as warm as it was in the summer, when they complained about the heat. ~Author Unknown

'November' may derive from the Latin number 'novem' (nine). It was the ninth month after March in the ancient Roman calendar. According to Pagan beliefs it is the time of the 'Snow Moon' and described as the 'Moon of the Falling Leaves', in Native American tradition, by Black Elk.

A Special Thank You to Rehabbers

There is a group of individuals, dedicated to the care and release of abandoned and injured animals.  Theirs is a labor of love that  transcends the boundaries most of us so often set for ourselves.  For them, there is no such thing as not enough time, not enough room, or not enough money.

Being a rehabber is not a job for the feint of heart.  New babies require constant care. They're tiny and frail and some are ill, malnourished, or badly injured.  One can only conjecture why the babies were abandoned,  but when the call comes in, the rehabber goes into action taking on the role of surrogate Mom.

Perhaps the most difficult task for the rehabber is to  not become emotionally attached to these animals.  They know that not all of the infants they take in will survive.  Their consolation comes from knowing they have done everything humanly and humanely possible to help these youngsters. Still, they are saddened by the loss.

For those who make it, the rehabbers job is to keep them healthy, well nourished, and ready to be released back into the wild.  Something that's often easier said then done.  One look at these animals and you're instantly in love.

For those who think they would like to join the ranks of the rehabber, make sure you check your state regulations.  As a general rule, you will need to be trained and licensed.  Whatever expenses are incurred, and this includes any supplies you need to perform your work, are completely paid by you.  It is strongly suggested that you visit a local rehabber before you decide if this is something you would like to do.

This is the time of year when many animals are being released.  Youngsters who are not yet old enough will have to wintered over and released in the spring.  It's a job that requires a great deal of stamina because they depend on the rehabber for all their needs.

This is the season when family gather and give thanks for all their blessings.  To all the rehabbers, I would like to give a special thank you for all your dedication and hard work.  May your blessings be many.

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.
The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on.

- Emily Dickinson

Poor Little Booboo Munk

Ears with booboo. Turns out this nasty lump was caused by a bot fly.
Miss Ears DeMunk

It came as quite a shock when I went out to feed Miss Ears and found a large lump on her side right behind her left shoulder.  My first thought was that it was a tumor, but she did not seem lethargic in any way.  In fact, she was as spry as ever following me over to the back stairs.

She got up on my lap and let me feel this growth.  It was the size of a large marble and quite hard, but didn't seem to be causing her any pain.  I could not see any scratches or bite marks so I didn't think she had been in a fight.

Within a weeks time the lump had begun to shrink and by the end of the second week I noticed she had punctured the bottom of it allowing it to drain.  By the middle of week 3, it was completely healed.  It appears now that she had a cyst, but only she knows what happened that caused the infection.

Chipmunks are wonderfully resilient little animals.  They never cease to amaze me.  Now that the cold weather has settled in, my little friends have taken to their dens.  I won't be able to check up on Ears until the spring.  I hope every one has plenty of food and that they stay dry, warm and safe over the winter.

See you in February or March little chippies.
